The village of Lake Placid is the resort center of Essex County, offering unlimited summer and winter recreational opportunities. Set in the heart of mountain and lake country, this quaint village was the site of two Olympic Winter Games, in 1932 and 1980. Only two other communities in the world have hosted two Winter Games.
The U.S. Olympic Training Center is one of three in the country, bringing in thousands of athletes to train at the Olympic venues in Lake Placid. The community is home to three national governing bodies of sport: U.S. Luge Association, U.S Bobsled and Skeleton Federation, and U.S. Canoe/Kayak.
Lake Placid is also home to a brand new event, Ironman USA Lake Placid, a swim-bike-run competition and qualifier for the Ironman world championship in Hawaii.
